STATEMENT OF FAITH

I believe...
  1. The Scriptures

I believe in the plenary, verbal inspiration of the Old and New Testament Scriptures as originally given. These Scriptures are inerrant in all that they affirm and are my final authority in all matters of faith and conduct. The Bible is the inspired word of God. The 66 books which constitute the Bible are entirely reliable and truthful, and the Bible stands as the central authority over my life, my faith, and the direction of the church. (2 Timothy 3:16; Matthew 5:18; 2 Peter 1:20-21)

  2. The Godhead

I believe there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Who are the same in essence and co-equal in power and glory. (John 14:10, 26; 15:26)

  3. Jesus Christ

I believe Jesus Christ is fully God and fully Man in one Person. Prior to His incarnation He eternally existed with the Father. Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary. Though tempted by Satan, He lived a sinless life on this earth. He paid the penalty for the sins of all men with His own blood on the cross. He arose bodily from the grave and ascended into Heaven, where He now intercedes for His own as their great High Priest. (John 14:6; Acts 4:12)

  4. The Holy Spirit

I believe in the personality of the Holy Spirit. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. At conversion He regenerates, indwells, seals and baptizes the believer into the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit fills and conforms the yielded believer increasingly to the image of Christ. He enables the believer to live a life of Christian victory through faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to the Word of God. As He wills, the Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts and empowerment for spiritual service. (John 14:16; Ephesians 1:19-20; 1 Corinthians 12)

  5. Creation

I believe in the direct creative acts of God during the six-day creation account as recorded in Genesis 1. (Genesis 1

  6. Satan

I believe in the personality of Satan, a fallen angel, who, with other angelic beings, rebelled against God and was cast out of heaven. Although he was defeated at the cross and his final destiny shall be the lake of fire, he continues to be the archenemy of God, angels, and man. Satan is the personal, spiritual adversary of God and Gods followers. Satan actively opposes the work of the church and the spiritual vitality of Christians. I therefore take seriously, but in a balanced way, the reality of personal, spiritual opposition. Satan is doomed to final defeat and judgment when Christ returns. (Ephesians 6:12; Revelation 20)

  7. Man and Sin

I believe man was created in the image of God. In Adam he fell because of disobedience and rebellion against God and thereby incurred not only physical death, but also spiritual death which is separation from God. As a consequence, all mankind is declared by God to be totally depraved, having inherited a sinful nature and having become sinners in thought, word and deed. Human beings are created in the image of God. As such, we are unique among all of Gods creation. Through the abuse of our God-given free will, we have turned against God and this has resulted in spiritual death for all humankind. Humanity lives in a state of alienation and profound need which can only be satisfied by reconciliation with God through Christ. Without this reconciliation, all people stand under Gods righteous judgment. Humanity, although fallen, maintains the image of God and is, therefore, still dignified and unique. God continues to love us and reach out to us, even though we are hostile to Him. Believers in Jesus Christ receive a new nature that becomes the foundation for a process of transformation. (John 3:16; 2 Corinthians 5:17)

  8. Salvation

I believe the grace of God provides salvation from sin for all men only through personal repentance and faith in Jesus Christ and His atoning work.

  9. The Church

I believe the Universal Church is comprised of all true believers. With Christ as her head, she exists in local expression to glorify Him by edifying believers and evangelizing lost men everywhere. The church is composed of all those throughout history who place saving faith in Jesus Christ. The church is not an institution, but a people. God wants all Christians to live out their spiritual lives in a corporate context. This context of Christian love relationships is a crucial feature of our witness for Christ as it reflects Gods character to the world. The church is Gods chosen instrument through which the message of salvation is spread to all people. This mission is the central purpose for the church. We are to carry the good news locally and worldwide and demonstrate the gospel by relevant social action. (John 13:34, 35; 1 Corinthians 12:12-26; Matthew 28:19)

  10. The Second Coming

I believe in the literal, physical, second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. This age will conclude with the personal, bodily return of Christ. At that time, He will complete Gods plan to reestablish His just and righteous rule over all humanity. (Matthew 24:29-31; Revelation 20)

I consider myself to hold to the PRETERIST view of eschatology. For complete info on the Preterist position, visit the Preterist Archive website. (Note: I do not necessarily agree with everything at this site.)

 11. Future State of the Dead

I believe that at death all men continue in conscious existence; the just in the presence of Christ, the unjust in torment in Hades. The just await their bodily resurrection, at the rapture of the Church, to the reward of everlasting life and blessedness. The unjust await their bodily resurrection at the Great White Throne, to judgment and everlasting punishment of conscious torment in the lake of fire.

At the final judgment, God will assign all people their eternal destinieseither life or judgment. Those who have responded to Jesus Christ with saving faith will receive the eternal life they have already been promised (John 5:24), while others will live under eternal judgment. Therefore, because eternal issues are at stake, there is an urgency to communicate the gospel. (Matthew 25:46; 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10)

VALUE OF AN INTELLECTUAL FAITH

"If we base our faith solely on past, personal experience, we tread on thin ice. Tragedies in the present have a way of obliterating good feelings about God's presence in the past. Unless we have logical, rational arguments for the truth of our faith on which to fall back on when our emotions betray us, we too will be tempted to 'hang it all up.'"

This paragraph by Craig Blomberg originally appeared in The Shield newsletter. I have experienced first-hand the reality of the situation Blomberg describes. In my short life I have suffered through many health and other difficulties.

With all the problems going on, my faith has been stretched to the limit. There have been may times I have felt like "hanging it all up" and turning my back on Christ and the Christian faith.

"to whom shall I go?"

But whenever I have had these kind of thoughts the words of Peter in John 6:68 come to mind. The context of the verse is when many of Jesus' disciples have left Him.

The passage continues, "Then Jesus said to the twelve, 'Do you also want to go away?' Then Simon Peter answered Him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life'" (John 6:67,68).

"To whom shall I go?" If I left Christ and the Christian faith, I would have to turn to some other belief system. It is impossible to live without holding some basic assumptions about life and ultimate reality.

Should all of my suffering cause me to become an atheist? But if "Chance" or "Fate" or "natural forces" are the cause of everything, then there is no reason to believe there is any purpose to anything, including my own existence.

But then why do I feel there should be a purpose to life? Moreover, how can these impersonal forces be trusted to bring any good out of my anguish? Death is left as the only way out; so why not just commit suicide and end it all now?

Maybe I should become one of Jehovah's Witnesses. They promise "You can live forever in paradise on earth." But this is only for some supposed future. What good does it do me now? And how can the finite "Jehovah of the Watchtower" be trusted to really bring about this paradise? Further, how can a finite god and a created "Jesus" (both of whom are stuck up in heaven) comfort me now or throughout eternity?

What about Mormonism? It promises me I can become a god. But with all that has happened to me that has been completely out of my control, can I seriously believe I can become a god and rule an entire planet? Furthermore, since the Mormon god is just an "exalted man" himself, can I really trust that he has been in control of all that has occurred?

Shall I turn to the New Age Movement and its belief that everything is part of an impersonal god. But if everything is god, then pain is a part of this god and thus eternal; there is no hope it will ever end. And how can an "IT" be trusted to find some purpose in suffering and bring any good out of it?

Then there is Christian Science. It teaches all suffering and pain is just an illusion.2 I'm sorry but the anguish I have been experiencing is very real.

I could go on, but as I survey the various religions and philosophies of the world in light of all that has happened to me, all I can do is cry out with the Preacher, "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity" (Eccl. 1:2).

A Solid Basis for Faith in the Christian God

So I turn back to the Christian God. Is He there? Is He in control? Does He care? There have been many times I have felt like Naomi when she cried out:

"Do not call me Naomi [pleasant]; call me Mara [bitter], for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?" (Ruth 1:20,21).

But in this cry, Naomi shows she still believes in the LORD. She acknowledges He is Almighty. As such, she knows He is in control of all that has been happening to her. This has been my experience also.

I think back over all I have studied as regards the integrity of the Christian faith. I remember that only the Christian worldview is a logically consistent belief and grounded in historical fact.

Meanwhile, all other belief systems fall apart when they are investigated in depth. They are inherently contradictory and/ or they don't coincide with the facts of reality.

Most importantly, as regards my personal experience, other belief systems can't hold up when one's life begins to fall apart. They offer no hope, no comfort to the suffering soul.

The Christian faith acknowledges the existence and reality of evil (Gen. 3). Yet it promises there is a purpose behind it all. Ultimately, good will come out of it (Rom. 8:18-30).

The God of Christianity is omniscient (Prov. 15:3), omnipotent (Luke 1:37), infinite (Eph. 4:6), and unchanging (Num. 23:19), and can know He loves me (1 John 4:8-10). So I can trust He knows what He is doing and that He can and will bring to pass all He has promised (Ps. 33:10f). This means His pledge to end evil and to "wipe away every tear" is reliable (Rev. 21:4).

Even now, this God can comfort me. He promises, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Heb. 13:5). This assurance of His presence can be taken literally since He "fills heaven and earth" (Jer. 23:24).

He is also in control of all things. So He can and will work out all that has happened to me for His glory and my ultimate good, just as He did for Naomi (Ruth 4:14,15; Phil. 1:6,11).

My faith has been tested. But because of my previous studies regarding the veracity of the Christian faith and the utter bankruptcy of all other worldviews, my faith is still intact (Heb. 6:9-12; 2 Pet. 1:5-12; compare Prov. 5:23; Hos. 4:6).

Many problems still lie ahead; but praise be to Him who has been upholding me "by the word of His power" (Heb. 1:3; see also Phil. 2:12,13; 1 Pet. 1:3-7; Jude 24,25).

The LORD will perfect that which concerns me; your mercy, O LORD, endures forever;
do not forsake the works of Your hands
(Ps 138:8).

THE EXCHANGED LIFE (GRACE LIFE)

The "Exchanged Life" is Christ living in the Christian as His true life (Gal. 2:20). God didn't put Christ in you to help you live life or to take over when you can't handle things anymore. The truth is that Christ came to be the very life of the Christian, the believer's true identity. So many problems stem from walking after a false identity, which in the Bible is called the flesh life (Rom. 8:6-9; Gal. 5:16,17,24).

Understanding the Christ-life truths provides a whole life solution to being the person God intends you to be. As the apostle Paul did, we know that you too, can learn in faith to proclaim, "For me to live is Christ" (Phil., 1:21). That's not imitation, but a participation in His life as your life.

The Gospel Works! (John Moneypenny)

"And for this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received from us the word of Gods message, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe" (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

Perhaps you can relate to a man named Ed; a man whose words seemed to reflect the anguish of so many Christians today:

"Im so frustrated with my Christian life! Ive tried and tried and nothing seems to work for me. I just cant seem to get it together and start living the way Im supposed to live. I know that I am a big disappointment to God and especially to other Christians. I know everyone else has it all together. I, on the other hand, am overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, turmoil, feelings of condemnation and guilt. I am so tired of all this! Can you give me something practical, something I can use right away to effect a change in the way I live and in the way I see life. Isnt there some method that others have found will remedy this struggle? Isnt there a book I could read, a tape I could listen to, or maybe a video I could watch that will lay out for me the 5 keys to successful godly living? Please give me something that works!"

Maybe you know someone like Ed. Maybe you have done battle with these sort of thoughts yourself. Whats the key, whats the answer, whats the method, whats the 10-step program that will finally allow me to experience the peace, joy, and contentment Ive always thought I could have in Christ? And when will I have the willingness and the capacity to extend love to others? The answer to these questions is not complex, nor hidden, nor above the ability of anyone to do it. The answer isbelieve the gospel! Thats right. Believe the gospel! This simple truth will revolutionize your life as a child of God if you will humbly accept it. Nothing has made more of a difference to me and I have tried every method under the sun!

I am telling you with all that is in me that joy, peace, and contentment in life come exclusively from resting in the finished work of Jesus Christ. As powerful as the gospel was to you when you received it for salvation, it is equally as powerful as you make your way through life continuing to revel in it. There is a power that is inherent to the gospel message itself. The apostle Paul said that while the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, to us who are being saved it is the power of God (1 Cor. 1:18). Do you see that the word of the crossIS the power of God? And not only that but it, the gospel itself, performs its work in you who believe (1 Thes. 2:12)! Wow! The gospel works. The gospel performs. It works in those who believe. It works to minister to your heart the very love, joy, and peace of God. And what it works in you, it will inevitably work out of youto others!

There is something that happens in you when you hear again and again the word of the cross, the testimony of Jesus Christ and His finished work, something that no method or formula or 10-step program to holy living can hold a candle to. There is an inward strengthening and confidence that grows within you as you not only receive the word of God but, more importantly, you trust that what it proclaims is really true. Take note, however, that this power of God comes not from just hearing the gospel but uniting what we hear with faith. All-out, sold-out, uncompromising, jump-in-with-both-feet, get-off-the-fence, F-A-I-T-H! In what? In Christ and in what the bible declares He has already done to forgive you, reconcile you, justify you, sanctify you, glorify you, right you, and resurrect you to the newness of life!

There is no secret formula to acting like who you are in Christ. The bottom-line is thisour hope, not only for salvation but for daily living, is in Jesus Christ. He IS the gospel. And when He, our risen Savior, is preached, all that is practical to our new life in Him is there for the taking and available to do its work. And in whom will it work? It works in those who believe. Do you want to see changes in your thinking, changes in your attitude, changes in how you act and in how you treat others? Do you want something practical? Then believe the gospel. Now youve got something that will work!

Are You Right With God? (John Moneypenny)

How many times have you heard another brother or sister in Christ, or maybe one who thought he or she was in Him, declare to you that, because your behavior was not measuring up to the commands of God, you needed to "get right with Him?" Something you had done, were doing, were thinking about the possibility of doing, or had not done now placed you in a state of being "not right with the Lord."

Panic and fear begin to race through your mind as you consider the horrid consequences of your failing to measure up once again to the righteousness God requires. But as you made another re-commitment to read your Bible more, go to church more, witness more, ask God to forgive you more, tithe more (along with working more to stop doing what you were doing to make yourself "not right with God"), did it ever dawn on you that all your doing or not doing would never be enough?

"For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all." (James 2:10)

"Nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified." (Gal. 2:16)

It was a sobering, sorrowful, and yet thrilling day when the Spirit of God convinced me that every one of my attempts to earn right standing before him through my deeds amounted to one long trail of cow chips. Sobering because I had been intoxicated with how wonderful my flesh could perform but God was now telling me that the flesh profits nothing (John 6:63). Sorrowful because I saw that I had been placing some confidence in my own works for righteousness and acceptance in addition to my Saviors. And thrilling because I had now given up on any hope in my flesh being able to gain or maintain right standing before my Lord. There I found freedom, rest, peace, and joy in the Lord!

What is "righteousness" anyway? It means rightness or being right. Its' source is God himself. He is righteousness, rightness, and right. All righteousness begins and ends in Him. And since He has the market cornered on it and we could never achieve it, we must receive itas a gift. Through Christ, through the cross, He has made us right. He has made us acceptable. He has done all that was required to make you right. He is our only hope of righteousness.

For some of us, it is a startling truth of Scripture that our righteousness before God is not dependent upon our performance but Christs, not our obedience, but His!

"So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. For as through the one mans disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous." (Romans 5:18-19)

"And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." (Philippians 2:8)

He has performed for you. He has acted on your behalf. His obedience unto to death has provided righteousness for all who will take him up on the offer void of any works.

Could it be that the reason we see so many saints struggling with the deeds of the flesh (Gal. 5:19) is that they continue to rely upon the flesh as a means to attaining righteousness and acceptance with God? Why do they do so? Because they are not believing and trusting implicitly in the unalterable, eternal righteousness they already have in Him as a gift. They are believing a lie that says a mans adherence to codes, rules, regulations, or commandments determines whether or not he is right with God. Has anything changed throughout history? Has not man stubbornly, desperately sought to make himself right either in the eyes of men or in the eyes of God or both! Can a man truly be saved trusting both in Christs work and some degree of his own?

Why do you think Paul proclaimed that those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:24)? Could it be because the flesh wants to be right? It wants to have a righteousness of its own. It has a passion, a desire, a lusting to have some role in attaining righteousness in lieu of, or in addition to, the work of the Spirit (Gal. 3:1-7; 5:16-17). And to fall into that trap of relying upon the flesh for any contribution toward our righteousness is unbelief, foolishness, and at worst, evidence that maybe we have never given up on ourselves, never come to die that we might have life.

Righteousness is a gift for which you do not work, not a wage that you earn.

"Now to the one who works, his wage is not reckoned as a favor but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness." (Romans 4:4-5).

If anyone ever tells you again that you need to get right with God, stand on the truth that you already are right with Him through His Sons obedience, not yours! I have a dear friend in Christ who reminded me several months ago that in matters pertaining to the object of our faith, Jesus Christ, we cannot separate the person of Christ from His work. In other words, are you trusting in the risen, glorified Savior who justifies the ungodly through simple faith in His already completed work, or are you trusting in the Jesus who taught under the law, demanded that men be perfect, and had not yet fulfilled the work of redemption through the cross? Are you placing your faith in the baby in a manger or the One who was the final sacrifice for sins, the Redeemer, the Reconciler, the Sanctifier, the Giver of Life Eternal?!

In his most recent book, "An Urgent Call to a Serious Faith," author and lecturer Dave Hunt says that "to 'believe on the Lord Jesus Christ' (Acts 16:31) includes who He is and what He has done." The Jesus who saves the wicked is the Jesus who has already paid our sin debt in full, has crucified the old vile sinner-man we used to be, has buried you and your sins never to see them or the old you again, has made you a new creation, holy and blameless in His sight, and has seated you securely in heaven in Him! His righteousness is obtained through faith in His works, not yours. And once you have been made right, you cannot do anything to gain or maintain that righteousness. It is a gift, it is His grace, it is His perfect love toward you demonstrated in the cross of Christ.

In fact, any man who seeks to work for righteousness will not reach his goal because it can only be acquired through faith in Jesus Christ. Folks, Gods offer of perfect righteousness could not be any simpler yet we have made it so complex. He is telling us not to work for righteousness if you want His! Stop working, stop striving to earn something that, if you are in Christ, you have had since the day He saved youthe gift of righteousness. If, tragically, you choose to work for it, you will never gain it!

"What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; but Israel pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, just as it is written, "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." (Romans 9:30-33)

Those who have trusted in and are solely dependent upon the finished work of Jesus Christ via the cross on their behalf plus nothing are eternally right with God! Perfect performance and perfect obedience will never gain, maintain, or improve your right standing with God. Neither will imperfect performance and imperfect obedience cause you to lose, forfeit, or lessen your right standing before God. It is His performance, His obedience on Calvarys cross almost 2,000 years ago plus nothing that has provided the gift of righteousness to all who would receive it by faith!

So how do those who have trusted in the completed work of Christ for salvation "get right" with God? They dont do anything to get right with Him. Why? Because they already are through faith in the working of God (Col. 2:12, NASB), not themselves! It is the one who does not work but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, (whose) faith is reckoned as righteousness (Rom. 4:5).

So what about you? Have you stumbled over the stumbling stone? Have you been trying to add to His perfect righteousness with a dash or two of your own? Have you been working and doing in order to "get right with God?" If so, get up and come to the cross. Its time to die, that you might have new life. Its time to be done with trusting in anything you can do to become right with God, and once-and-for-all rely completely on what He has done once-and-for-all.
